BECOMING A REGISTERED EQUINE INTERACTION PROFESSIONAL

There are many graduate students and others entering the field of human-equine interactions who would like to begin the process that would result in certification as an Equine Interaction Professional. To facilitate this process, a separate category of participation has been designed such that those with an advanced degree in education or mental health, specific training in human-equine interaction , but not the required hours of experience in the field can submit documentation of education and training and earn the title of Registered Equine Interaction Professional (REIP).

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTERED EIP

1. Mental Health

  1. Documentation of completion of an advanced degree (Masters or above) in counseling, psychology, social work or other study of mental health.
  2. Documentation of at least 60 hours of training in human-equine interaction. This training may be a part of the individual's graduate education.
  3. Documentation of 60 hours of supervised work in human-equine interaction. Letter of reference from equine assisted mental health professional you have worked with. This letter should describe the amount and type of work you have done together.

2. Education

  1. Documentation of completion of an advanced degree in education or human services or post-graduate certificate in teaching or in human services.
  2. Documentation of at least 60 hours of training in human-equine interaction. This training may be a part of the individual's graduate education.
  3. Documentation of 60 hours of supervised work in human-equine interaction. Letter of reference from equine assisted education professional you have worked with. This letter should describe the amount and type of work you have done together.

PROCEDURE

The title of REIP will only be granted once. The practitioner has five years to complete the required three years of professional experience in the field and the required 1,000 hours of experience and training in human-equine interaction. Candidates seeking this registration should review the handbook posted on the CBEIP website to get the specific requirements for this portion of the certification process. On completion of this portion of the requirements, the candidate submits documentation of this experience to CBEIP along with the required fee and if the training meets the standard for certification the applicant will have the opportunity to sit for the exam. With a passing score, the certificate will be granted.

Process

  1. Completion of educational requirements
  2. Submit documentation to CBEIP along with required fees
  3. Gain professional experience in mental health or education.
  4. Gain professional experience in human-equine interaction
  5. Submit documentation to CBEIP office (see address above) along with required fee.
  6. Take the exam
  7. Certificate is granted.

Fees

  1. Initial application and review of materials: $200
  2. Yearly fee for continued certification: $50
  3. Completion of certification including final review of documentation and completion of the exam: $200*

Benefits of Registered EIP

Registered practitioners will be given the opportunity to be formally listed on the CBEIP website as a Registered Equine Interaction Professional (REIP). They may send a 100 word description of the services offered and contact information to CBEIP. This information will be available to visitors to the website.

* Registrants who complete the certification process in three years will be paying the same as those who became certified and renewed their certificate three years later (a total of $500).
